A passionate believer in strong UK defence and NATO, Wheeldon is well known by senior officers in the Royal Air Force, Royal Navy, defence and aerospace industries and across government in Whitehall and Westminster. His strategic influence support, advocacy and engagement work aims to push forward the importance that air and maritime power plays within defence, of maintaining strong UK sovereign manufacturing capability, exports & investment in R&D technology and innovation.
A frequent speaker at conference events, former advisor to the House of Commons Defence Select Committee, regular contributor to the UK/US press and guest broadcaster on various media outlets talking mainly on defence, aerospace, industry and export related matters, his regular private email ‘Commentary’articles have since 1993 covered a wide range of macro-economic, geo-political,industry, military, defence and aerospace matters. These are received by 8,500 recipients across the UK Military, Industry, Westminster, Whitehall, NATO, Pentagon,Brussels and many private individuals.
Working closely with industry, supporting the UK military, along-time advocate for defence, ‘talking head’ and specialist commentator , Wheeldon works hard to ensure Defence and NATO are prioritised by government and also in raising the mantra and importance of maintaining strong UK sovereign based manufacturing capability across defence, aerospace, engineering and capital goods sectors.
Well-travelled internationally, particularly in North America, Europe, Gulf and Far East regions, he has frequently worked alongside UKDept of Int Trade DSO in sponsored defence export programme campaigns in USA, UK G to G contracts with Saudi Arabia and other Gulf States. Well known within EU, NATO, MOD & US Dept of Defense, in 2015 he had the honor of addressing senior members of NATO Military at the Brussels Headquarters. He spent time in Bosnia during 1992/3 and deployed to other ‘conflict’ areas including Basra,Iraq (2005 and 2006) - the latter looking specifically at equipment deployment of UK military rotary capability. He has visited sovereign UK bases abroad including Cyprus, NATO military bases including Naples and has visited many USAF and US Navy bases.
SC & NATO cleared and having enjoyed hands-on flight and at-sea operational experience, he remains a regular visitor to Royal Air Force and Royal Navy military establishments in order to be updated, briefed and often presenting ‘fireside chats’ and lectures to military officers. An Honorary Member of IV (AC) Squadron RAF Valley, 1X(Bomber) Squadron and the RAF Regiment and has spent decent periods at sea with the Royal Navy on both HMS St Albans and HMS Dauntless and also on a US Navy ‘Nimitz class carrier, USS George H.W. Bush.
A former advisor to the House of Commons Defence Select Committee and regularly meeting with members of the House of Commons and Lords, Wheeldon has presented at many military and defence based conferences including at the CAS RAF Air Power Conference in 2011, 2012 and 2013, Staff College Shrivenham, Air Command, RAF College Cranwell, Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, NATO Brussels and presented the 2015 ‘Slessor Lecture’ in the House of Commons. In2016, he was presented the 'Lifetime award for Air Power Advocacy' from the Air League by HRH Duke of Edinburgh.
