Damian is the UK’s Director General AUKUS. Working to the MOD’s Permanent Secretary and Cabinet Secretary, he is responsible for cohering the UK’s AUKUS strategy, sitting above the capability pillars to drive wider AUKUS policy and strategic communications in line with the UK’s foreign and security policy objectives. Damian works closely with the Cabinet Office and the most senior industry partners to ensure we collectively grasp the diplomatic, economic, and military opportunities AUKUS presents.
In his previous role as Director General Delivery and Strategy, Damian was responsible for developing Defence’s strategy and delivery on the commitments made in the Integrated Review Refresh and the subsequent Defence Command Paper Refresh (2023)
He was Director General Industry, Trade and Economic Security from August 2021 to September 2022, where he was responsible for delivering key commitments and opportunities in the Integrated Review, Defence Plan and Defence and Security Industrial Strategy (DSIS) and supporting the UK’s critical industrial base.
He was the Director of Industrial Strategy and Exports following the successful delivery of the Defence & Security Industrial Strategy in March 2021. He was also responsible for the successful delivery of the Overseas Operations Bill which became an Act of Parliament in May 2021.
Damian was the Chief of Staff to four Secretaries of State for Defence, supporting and advising Ministers and senior staff, and working across Whitehall and internationally to deliver Defence and government priorities. Prior to this appointment, Damian worked at the Permanent Joint HQ as the Chief of Staff Policy and Finance.
Damian attended the Royal College of Defence Studies for a year in 2013/14. He spent three busy years before then as a civilian Head in the Operations Directorate covering a broad range of operational policy issues. Prior to this post he was the Chief Scientific Adviser’s Strategic Adviser and Senior Finance Officer overseeing the transformation of MOD Science & Technology organizations.
Prior to this he has gained significant experience through his broad range of posts working in Defence and security since 1990. These have included roles in the Foreign & Commonwealth Office and the Pentagon in the US.
