The ability to adopt emerging and disruptive technologies, such as big data, AI/ML, quantum, and space technologies, increasingly relies on the ability of national security and defence establishments to fully leverage and contribute to regional, national and transnational innovation ecosystems. With complex supply chains increasingly under adversarial strain, there is a need to build and rely on mature sovereign defence innovation ecosystems, strongly linked with key allies and partners. This workshop will bring together national and local government, defence and national security, academia, risk capital and innovation communities to discuss the state of the UK’s defence innovation ecosystem and the importance of expanding and maturing regional ecosystems, such as the North-West, at a time of persistent competition and increasing international instability.
The event will aim to:
• Present and discuss the insights from recent relevant reports such as the D Group and Ploughshare report on UK Defence Innovation Ecosystem (2024) and the Lancaster University-commissioned ‘Perspective Economies for the North West Cyber Corridor’ report.
• Bring together relevant national and regional stakeholders to discuss and agree key priorities for the maturing and development of the UK’s national and regional defence innovation ecosystem in the North-West.
A finalised agenda will be published in due course.
