The D Group's Infrastructure Working Group has been working with Nick Smallwood of the Infrastructure Projects Authority (IPA) to investigate new ways for the sector to work together. This began with a deep dive into the working practices of the sector, looking at the issue of low margins on public projects, overcoming obstacles to using new technologies and looking for where we could learn from best practice in other industries.
Shortly after distilling our findings into a written analysis, the Prime Minister announced radical changes to the HS2 Programme, with the Northern leg of the project cancelled in favour of alternative, smaller investments. We have updated our analysis, focusing on what can be learned from the success and failures of HS2, and how these lessons can support the delivery of national infrastructure in the future.
