Luke Pollard was appointed Minister for the Armed Forces in the Ministry of Defence on 9 July 2024. He was re-elected as the MP for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport in July 2024.
Luke attended Tavistock College and Christleton High School in Chester before returning to Devon to study Politics at the University of Exeter. He graduated with a First-class degree in Politics specialising in the politics of the European Union and international terrorism. In 2021 he graduated from the Royal College of Defence Studies.
Luke Pollard was elected as the Labour and Co-operative Member of Parliament for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport in June 2017, and re-elected in both 2019 and 2024. He has served on Labours front bench in opposition as the Shadow Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and between 2022 and 2024 as Shadow MinAF; he was also Vice-Chair of the All-Party Armed Forces Group. He has completed all five years of courses on the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme. In parliament he has proposed a new bill to recycle the retired nuclear submarines tied up alongside his Devonport constituency. He has visited the British Army forward deployed forces in Estonia and training operations in Oman.
From working at Carlton Television Luke went on to work on a successful 2005 general election campaign in Labours London headquarters. He then worked for Edelman, the global communications firm, before moving to ABTA, the travel trade body. He worked across London and Brussels before leaving the role in 2014 to become a full-time candidate for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport. Having narrowly missed out on a seat, Luke began a role as a Director for Field Consulting advising on controversial construction projects, before leaving the role in 2017 having been elected as an MP.
Luke lives in Plymouth with his partner Sydney. He’s a keen Plymouth Argyle fan and wild swimmer, swimming regularly in Plymouth Sound.
